Is SimpleSwap Safe?
SimpleSwap is self-custodial: it does not maintain a long-term cryptocurrency balance for users, and swaps move directly between a wallet you own and a wallet you own. That shifts responsibility for wallet addresses, network selection, key security and site verification onto you.
What Self-Custody Protects Against, and What It Doesn't
What the Model Protects Against
No standing balance. SimpleSwap does not hold a long-term balance of user funds between swaps; crypto moves directly wallet to wallet.
Distributed liquidity. Swaps are routed across 20+ CEX and DEX sources rather than sitting in one custodial pool.
Keys stay with you. SimpleSwap does not manage or store private keys, and never asks a user for them.
What Shifts Onto the User
Wrong address or network. Blockchain transactions are irreversible. Sending an asset on the wrong network can mean permanent loss.
Floating-rate movement. A floating rate tracks the live market and can move against you before execution.
Lookalike domains. The only official SimpleSwap domain is simpleswap.io. Copycat sites and phishing pages target crypto users searching for it.
Timing can also be affected by network congestion or blockchain confirmation delays outside SimpleSwap's control, since swaps depend on third-party liquidity and the underlying networks.
When Does Verification Apply?
SimpleSwap's own FAQ describes when identity checks come into play.
"There are cases when we conduct KYC of designated customers and/or transactions. This only happens if our system or our partners' system recognizes the transaction as suspicious." — SimpleSwap FAQ
Most crypto-to-crypto swaps do not require an account or ID upfront. Fiat-to-crypto purchases go through third-party payment providers, which apply their own KYC requirements. Outside of that, verification is triggered selectively, not universally, when a transaction is flagged by SimpleSwap's or a partner's compliance systems.
How to Verify You're Using the Real SimpleSwap
Check the domain. The address bar should read simpleswap.io before you enter any wallet address.
Check the legal pages exist. A Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Anti-Financial Crime and KYC Policy should be published and consistent.
Double-check addresses and networks. Verify both before sending funds.
Keep your seed phrase offline. SimpleSwap will never ask for it; treat any request for it as a scam.
Allow time for confirmations. Congested networks can take longer to clear before funds arrive.
Use official support for reviews. If a swap is paused for compliance, respond only through the official support channel on simpleswap.io.
